Chapter Twenty-One

“It means what it says. You’ll rule over this land as Shadow Mother one day if you make the changes that needs done. Without you our world will continue to fall into torment until we are all but extinct. You’ll turn our people around, make us stronger.” Nightmare explained, while his hand gently rubbed her leg. “During my time working under Shadow Mother I’ve been able to learn more about the prophecies than others. She has known this would happen for years, and we’ve been preparing.”

“All the while taking the Sunkins—my mother’s people—down.” There was no anger in her voice, it was just a statement.

“You were raised Earthside, do you want to see that land gone? Your family, friends, vanished? If we let the Sunkins go on as they have, in five years there’ll be nothing left of your world. You have to realize that.”

“I guess I never thought of it like that. All of this is so new…I never expected there to be this battle to keep humans safe, and I sure never thought I would be a part of it. It’s just all too much. What if I can’t do it?” She let her head fall back onto Dreamer’s chest, and closed her eyes.

“I understand that it’s a lot of pressure, and a complete change from the life you’re used to. If anyone can do it, you can.” He squeezed her thigh. “We’ll be there, doing whatever we can to help you. But you can do it. Have faith in yourself.”

She listened to Dreamer’s heartbeat, wishing she had the faith in herself they seemed to have in her. It would make things so much easier, and she could stop doubting herself.

“You’re not thinking of leaving us to…” Dreamer started to ask but couldn’t finish. It was clear from the stiffness in his body he wondered if she would go to the land of the Sunkins and leave them behind. She wanted to stay right where she was.

She raised her hand to his cheek. “Oh Dreamer. I’m not leaving. This is my home now. She left me as a child because my abilities were too dark for her, I’m sure nothing has changed. Even if so I’m not going anywhere.”

“Your abilities…” Nightmare started. “That explains where your telekinesis comes from.”

“What?” They both asked together.

“Telekinesis is customarily a Sunkin power.”

The weight of his words hung in the air like heartburn from spicy food. Why didn’t Shadow Mother tell me this? Once my mixed heritage becomes known to the other Queens will it cause more problems? I can’t lose the only place I have left…Her father’s words played in her mind again…They’ll outcast her when they find out what she is…If I become an outcast from Shadow Providence where would I go? I can’t return to Sweetwater without Dad. “I’m not. Does this change anything? Will I not be welcomed here because…”

“Shadow Mother already knew before she welcomed you to our land. Nothing has changed. I believe it might be your mixed heritage that allows you to complete the tasks ahead.
